Letter written to Brita Jonsson Nelson and her husband Andrew Nelson by Brita's sister, Elisabeth Jonsson (later Sabelman). Hogbo, the 24th of April 1880 Dear Sister and Brother-in-Law: "Blessed are are the dead who hearafter die in the lord." Indeed "Blessed are the people whoe God is the Lord." Dear sister, it is already late and my eyes are smarting because my stirred-up feelings have pressed so many tears from them this day. But, nevertheless, I cannot try to rest. Therefor I "in spirit" will converse with you about this day's occurences. I must therefore tell you that the Lord has call our Father home to Himself at 8 0'clock this evening. This winter he has been frail in health but nevertheless has been very industrious. ON Monday morning he came home from Jok. Hogfors's where he had been a couple of weeks to help him while he tore down his old farm-house and instead put up a two-roomed building. When then on Monday fel himself so weak he went home form there. His illness got more intense for every hour. Nevertheless he was very patient. The same day I happened to go home and got to hear and see how sick he was. He said already then that he hoped and wished to now get to go home to God. He had for a long time wished that he could go before Greta and I travelled to America. After the at I went home every afternoon when I finished school and have even been home at night. He thought that this was so good that we were with him both with and for him[sic]. His illness has mostly existed in his breast. He did not want us to stay up but that we should all go to bed at night. Since "your mother hears well, when I need help then she is up right away," he said. And that is how it was. For she is a model mother and she has been a model and faithful wife. And had, even, to the last exemplary sympathy of her both to body and soul. Even to the last he was fully conscious and talked and witnessed about the Lord in the last hours. About noon it showd that death's struggle had begun, so we got word of that. His children and grandchildren (except for you and yours) as well as several others gathered around his bedside. He took farewell of us and said: "We shall now be parted but only for a short time if you all walk so that you come along on the road that leads to life. Then we shal meet up there. All is now forgiven and forgotten. Sins are buried in the depths of the sea. "I forget what is behind me and do my best to reach what is ahead, I press toward the mark," etc. He had to rest between every sentence that he spoke. But then he saw us stand there crying so he said, "God bless you all that stand with tears, since God will take up my soul from here." To his grandchildren he said: "Boys, forsake the world's worthless water sources, for they have such poor water! Go to the Good Shepherd. He is the Living Fountain, etc." To Margret (Maria's daughter) he said: "My good child, you are on a good way. But do not go away form Jesus. Soon the world will come and will bewilder you, but pray to Jesus, so that you will be kept." In the afternoon he seem to be a little more alert. And then he asked me to read God's Word and pray for them that were assembled for that "they all needed that." In the morning I had asked if he wanted me to greet you. He said: "Yes, yes, greet them. They will get the best greeting when you come. You know how I have it." Many times he prayed to God. Before this in his last illness he complained occasionally that there was so much darkness and doubt. But then we reminded him of some of God's promises to hold them fast and he consoled. He was amazed that he should receive so much grace. Now he is at home. Praise God! May we all meet him in our Father's house up there when the battle for us is done! In the bottom of my heart I am thankf ul that the Lord called him now is that I was present at his death. And then it feels like my heart would break. But the Lord wil lheal the wound and in His time inject comfort and peace in our hearts. That is what I hope for you. Your sister, Elis P.S. Greet our frends for us. Thanks for your letter. God bless our mother. May the Lord fill the vacancy our father has left and which will be even greather when we leave her. I am sending a little lock of our father's hair to you. John 14:1-3; 17:24. "Our fellowship is in heaven." |
